Niso Makedonka

Niso Makedonka. Meets him in the V.I.P.s’ hut. Evening.

In the V.I.P.s’ hut, electricity. A bulb dangles from the high ceiling. The guards’ generator provides power to the V.I.P.s’ hut. V.I.P.s pay the full price. There are five of them left:

Bakish.

Dr. Rosenfeld.

Niso Makedonka.

Middle-aged man, profession obscure. Bags are packed. He’s being released tomorrow.

Manager of an international bank. Lies on a thick mattress, reading a book. A sheet on the mattress. Fascinating book, evidently. Doesn’t respond to his greeting.

Dr Rosenfeld, Bakish, Niso Makedonka, the one getting out tomorrow - they respond, each in his own way. Dr Rosenfeld - a cynical, dismissive reply, neutral expression. Bakish - contrived basso profundo, general air of gloom. The soon-to-be-released - limpid look, voice of a little girl who has just been awarded a merit star. Niso Makedonka - optimism hanging by a thread.

The hut. Same dimensions as any other hut. Like the hut of the Gavroches- geriatrics - where more than fifty men sleep on the bare wooden floor. V.I.P.s - there are five of them. From tomorrow - four. V.I.P.s have electric light at night. Gavroches-geriatrics - just have the night. Stygian darkness.

Which is justice?

That which leads to repentance.

Justice of the V.I.P.s, to share with Gavroches-geriatrics: space, implements, foodstuffs. Justice of the Gavroches-geriatrics - to spurn the justice of the V.I.P.s.

Justice.

They are sitting in a distant corner, out of earshot, on chairs.

He’s uneasy.

Sitting on a chair seems strange to him. The days he has spent in the camp have changed fundamental habits. Instead of chairs - floor. As if he had never sat on a chair before.

Sitting on a chair - betrayal of Gavroches-geriatrics.

He sits. Listens.

V.I.P. is agitated. Blue, clear look. Face of an elephant. Optimism, covering depths of torment.

He has to reveal certain things to him.

Three days from now, he’ll be released. He has it from a reliable source. Freedom is on the way. He, Niso Makedonka, will be released three days from now.

Dramatic announcement. Hanging in the air. Left hanging in the air. It makes no impression on the youngest of the Gavroches. He makes no effort to pretend happiness, sorrow, amazement, envy. He’s immune from all these things. Liberated. Stomach-man. Sub-animal. Complete human being.

V.I.P. continues. Prisoners will be transferred to shacks. Ten days from now. On the hill. New wooden buildings, comfortable. Sleeping on bunks, not bare floor any more. V.I.P.s will be released, to the last of them. They’ll be adding olive oil to the kidney beans. A doctor will come to examine the prisoners. It’s all planned. Transfer to the shacks. Transfer from the shacks.

Where to?

V.I.P. elucidates. From the shacks - to Poland. The other side is putting on pressure. The other side is angry. The other side is being beaten. On all fronts. It’s not giving up on the Jews. Firm in its determination to exterminate them. To the very last one of them. The Bulgarian government has no objection. In principle. The Bulgarian government is prepared to send all camp inmates to the incinerators!..

V.I.P. is agitated. Shoulders quake.
